Hypothyroidism can occur in infants, young children, older children, and adults of all ages. This is a condition in which there is too little thyroid hormone, produced by the thyroid gland, present in the bloodstream. The body can’t function normally without enough of this hormone.
If not enough of the thyroid hormones are present in the bloodstream, the thyroid gland is considered underactive thyroid. This can especially be a problem in babies and younger children who need this hormone for growth and development. The side effects of this problem are the most severe and detrimental in young children. Older children will experience the same effects as adults, a feeling that he body is slowing down, which it is. They may be tired all the time and have trouble learning and remembering things.
Children and adults get the iodine needed to produce the thyroid hormone from foods. An iodine deficient diet is very rare. Iodine is present in many foods and it is added to regular table salt to ensure that the average person receives enough iodine in their diets. Salt labeled “iodized salt” is enriched with iodine. If your child has too little of the thyroid hormone in their bloodstream is is usually not the result of a poor diet. If so medication world not be needed, iodine supplements would do.
