Bad Cholesterol: The Enemy of Your Brain

A study reveals that high levels of bad cholesterol are associated with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which covers language disorders, memory loss, loss of care, can even influence the mood, in people more than 50 years, this was demonstrated by a multicenter study conducted at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, the International University of Catalonia, Familial Hypercholesterolemia Foundation and the Medical University of South Carolina and other schools.

Studied the mechanisms of sporadic Alzheimer’s disease, non-genetic, linking high levels of bad cholesterol in the MCI, a condition usually associated with age, and that may precede Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Various publications as the Journal of the American Journal of Medicine gave publicity to this work.

Professionals participated in the event the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, Familial Hypercholesterolemia Foundation, the Consortium Primary Salut D’Atenció de l’Eixample (integrated primary health care center in the Hospital) and the International University of Catalonia, who presented after five years of this work.

What is cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a lipid of animal origin. It is contained in meat, fishery products, dairy products and eggs. Cholesterol is an essential constituent of our body: it is involved in the structure and functioning of our cells, in the manufacture of hormones and is involved in digestion. If cholesterol is a normal constituent of our body, cholesterol is known to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, for example, myocardial infarction.

What good and bad cholesterol?
Cholesterol is transported in blood in two forms:

- LDL-cholesterol is “bad” cholesterol that tends to be deposited on the arteries. An excess of this type of cholesterol increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.
- HDL-cholesterol is “good” cholesterol that is considered protective of arteries: it reduces cholesterol to the liver.
