What is cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a lipid of animal origin. It is contained in meat, fishery products, dairy products and eggs. Cholesterol is an essential constituent of our body: it is involved in the structure and functioning of our cells, in the manufacture of hormones and is involved in digestion. If cholesterol is a normal constituent of our body, cholesterol is known to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, for example, myocardial infarction.

What good and bad cholesterol?
Cholesterol is transported in blood in two forms:

- LDL-cholesterol is “bad” cholesterol that tends to be deposited on the arteries. An excess of this type of cholesterol increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.
- HDL-cholesterol is “good” cholesterol that is considered protective of arteries: it reduces cholesterol to the liver.

How do I know if we have too much cholesterol?
A simple blood test done fasting for the determination of the lipids in the blood and so the diagnosis of hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol). If you do not know your cholesterol it is important that you speak to your doctor for research of excess cholesterol must be performed in all adults.

How to lower his LDL-cholesterol?
When we have an excess of LDL cholesterol, there are various effective measures to bring it down and thus reduce its cardiovascular risk:

- Food: Some dietary measures can reduce LDL-cholesterol. Briefly, it is reducing animal fats in favor of vegetable fats, focus on consumption of fish, fruits and vegetables and cereals.
- Physical Activity: Regular physical activity eg, brisk walking daily for 30 minutes. – If these two measures of healthy life are not sufficient enough to lower LDL-cholesterol, your doctor may prescribe, in addition to these measures, drug treatment.

In all cases, ask your doctor he will explain the various measures and recommend the right attitude. You can then, through his counsel, preserve your health.
