Consuming concord grape juice may reduce blood pressure in hypertensive men, revealed the results of a preliminary study presented at Experimental Biology 2003.
In the study, men with high blood pressure who drank concord grape juice for twelve weeks experienced a reduction of 5 points in your systolic and diastolic blood with no significant change compared with the group drinking a placebo.
“This is one of the first randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled using grape juice, in this case, Concord juice.,” Says author Kevin Maki, Ph.D., Director, Nutrition Research Unit and Metabolism (Nutrition and Metabolish Research Unit), Radiant Research, Chicago. “In our study, blood pressure was moderate as part of basic health information of study participants. When we examine the data, we saw reductions of nearly six points in systolic and diastolic blood among hypertensive men drinking Concord grape juice. Those who drank the placebo with the same amount of calories, showed no significant change. ”
The study, presented at the annual meeting of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (American Societies of Experimental Biology, or FASEB), looked at 80 healthy males, 45 to 70 years of age. For 12 weeks, half drank an average of 12 ounces of Concord grape juice a day and half drank the same amount of a placebo beverage designed in a manner that resembled and had the taste of grape juice. The results presented in FASEB drinkers considered to 17 Concord grape juice and 17 who drank the placebo juice began the study with blood pressure higher than the average.
“While additional studies need to be done to confirm these results, it is exciting to see that drinking Concord grape juice every day can be an easy way for hypertensive individuals to significantly reduce their blood pressure,” Maki stressed.
National Education Program on High Blood Pressure in the U.S. (U.S. National High Blood Pressure Education Program) estimates that five-point reduction in systolic blood pressure could result in a reduction of 14 percent of deaths from attacks heart and a reduction of 9 percent of heart disease.
The study authors referred to two previous clinical studies showing that consuming Concord grape juice improved arterial wall flexibility (demonstrated by increased flow of blood due to vessel dilation) which suggests a possible mechanism of action to reduce blood pressure.
Recent research also demonstrated the property of the juice of purple grapes to retard the oxidation of LDL cholesterol as well as inhibit the tendency of blood to clot. Both functions contribute to maintaining healthy cardiovascular function. The study was funded by Welch Foods Inc..

You make many good points. Blood pressure and hypertension have been interests of mine for a long time, and I think that a balanced holistic approach is overall the most promising. You have to eat healthy, exercise, and regularly watch your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and then things should be not too hard.
